3GPP Technical Specifications Group (TSG)

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is responsible for standardizing the specifications for mobile telecommunications systems, including 5G. The technical specifications for 5G within 3GPP are organized into different groups. Here are the main groups involved in the development of 5G technical specifications:

RAN (Radio Access Network):
This group focuses on the specifications related to the radio interface, protocols and access network architecture. It includes specifications for radio interfaces, radio resource management, mobility management. It is also responsible for defining the radio performance requirements, including radio frequency (RF) characteristics, radio propagation models, and other aspects related to radio performance evaluation and optimization.

CT (Core Network and Terminals):
This group is responsible for the development of specifications related to the core network elements, including the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) and the new 5G core network (5GC). It defines the protocols, interfaces, and procedures used for communication between core network elements and between the core network and user equipment (UE). One CT group is specifically dedicated to terminal-related aspects, including specifications for user equipment (UE) functionalities, capabilities, and interoperability requirements.

SA (Service and System Aspects):
This group deals with overall system architecture, security and privacy. It is also responsible for management, orchestration, charging and paving path for enabling critical communication applications. (Ref - 3GPP)
