4G Throughput Calculation
byRahul Kaundalon
Calculating the theoretical throughput of a 4G LTE network involves several factors including channel bandwidth, modulation and coding scheme (MCS), coding rate & transmission layers. Let's break down each component & related factors:
Channel Bandwidth: This represents the total bandwidth available for transmission. Common channel bandwidths in LTE include 1.4 MHz, 3 MHz, 5 MHz, 10 MHz, 15 MHz, and 20 MHz.
Number of Resource Blocks (RBs): Each LTE channel is divided into resource blocks. The number of RBs depends on the channel bandwidth. For example, a 20 MHz channel has 100 RBs.
Modulation - Bits per Symbol: This represents the number of bits carried by each modulation symbol. The modulation scheme used in LTE includes QPSK, 16-QAM, and 64-QAM, each carrying different numbers of bits per symbol (2, 4, and 6 bits, respectively).
Coding Rate: The coding rate represents the efficiency of the error-correction coding used in the LTE system. It is typically expressed as a fraction (e.g., 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, etc.), indicating the ratio of information bits to total bits after encoding.
Number of PDCCH Resource Elements (REs): carries control signaling information. PDCCH along-with PBCH/PSS/SSS/ Ref. Signals are considered as overheads.
Number of PDSCH Resource Elements (REs): This refers to the number of resource elements allocated for the PDSCH, which carries the user data in the downlink direction. These are the leftovers REs after occupancy of overheads.
Antenna layers : Higher number of layers can improve the data rates (for spatial multiplexing. And it depends upon Rank indicator, which further depends on Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR).
