5G Architecture (SA): Core Network Nodes & Functions
byRahul Kaundalon
5G Core Network functionality includes establishing secure connections, applying policies, managing mobility & sessions, and routing/aggregating traffic to/from end devices and internet.
5G architecture offers an ability to separate control and user plane end to end. This split helps to support Network slicing and provide wide ranges of services from ultra-low latency to enhanced mobile broadband services as these different services have different performance requirements (QoS).
Note: Architecture shown below is for Non- Roaming Standalone 5G Network. Here shows major Nodes & functions.
Network Functions and Entities –
– Authentication Server Function (AUSF)
– Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF)
– Data Network (DN), e.g. operator services, Internet access or 3rd party services
– Policy Control Function (PCF)
– Session Management Function (SMF)
– Unified Data Management (UDM)
– User Plane Function (UPF)
– Application Function (AF)
– User Equipment (UE)
– (Radio) Access Network ((R)AN)
