5G Spectrum
In 5G, there are two frequency ranges –
· FR1 (450 MHz – 7.1 GHz)
· FR2 (24.2 GHz – 52.6 GHz) – known as millimeter wave
In FR1 (Sub 7GHz), there are further two frequency bands –
1. Less than 1 GHz – also known as low band
2. 1 GHz to 7.1 GHz – also known as mid band
Low band helps to provide coverage layer due to its deep penetration and mid band / mm wave with large bandwidths help to enhance capacity.
Majority of telcos are deploying mix of low and mid bands initially in 5G.
Spectrum is one of the most valuable and expensive resource allocated to telcos and it must be used judiciously and efficiently.
Note - Below mentioned are the widely used specific bands in FR1 and FR2 ranges. There are few other bands which are not widely used and are not mentioned here.
