Non Terrestrial Network : Use Cases
Non-terrestrial networks (NTN) are communication systems that function outside of the earth's surface (unlike cellular/terrestrial networks that function on earth's surface).
Here are some specific use cases for Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) in various applications:
1. Mobility-Based Devices:
Global Connectivity for Aircraft: NTNs can provide broadband connectivity for commercial and private aircraft, enabling passengers to access internet, and real-time flight information.
Maritime Communication: NTNs can support maritime vessels with reliable communication links for navigation assistance, remote monitoring of ship systems, and maritime safety services.
2. Backhaul:
NTNs can serve as backhaul links for terrestrial networks in remote or underserved areas, extending coverage to locations where deploying traditional infrastructure is challenging or economically unfeasible.
3. Trunking:
NTNs can be used for trunking systems that support communications for public safety agencies and terrestrial networks, ensuring reliable and secure voice and data communication during emergencies.
4. Multiplay:
NTNs can deliver multiplay services combining voice, video, data, and multimedia content over a single network infrastructure, providing communication experiences for users across different devices and platforms.
5. Industrial IoT:
NTNs can enable industrial IoT applications by connecting sensors, actuators, and other devices deployed in remote or hazardous environments, allowing real-time monitoring, control, and optimization of industrial processes and assets.
Ecosystem of NTN is getting standardized by 3GPP & focus is on integrating it with 5G NR & IoT to achieve above use cases in better and efficient way.
